TMV Testing

Controlling Legionella in hot and cold water systems

In order to control the growth of Legionella bacteria within hot and cold water systems, as required by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Health and Safety Guidance (HSG) and Healthcare Technical Memorandum (HTM), thermostatic mixer valves (TMVs) need to be maintained annually by qualified professionals in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines.

The required maintenance of these valves differs by manufacturer, but typically requires:

  • Cleaning and disinfection of strainers installed within the valve or on the supply to the valves
  • Descaling and disinfection of the valve body
  • Testing of the failsafe functionality of the valves, to ensure they prevent the risk of scalding should the cold water supply to the valve fail
  • Testing of the blend temperature the valve is set to and adjusting it to be within the required operating temperature for the type of outlet it is serving
