DEFENCE

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is one of the largest and most diverse holders of estate in the UK. Its task is to protect our people, territories, values and interests at home.

In addition, there are many companies that supply or support the MOD and other defence companies.

As a reliable and trusted service provider to even the most sensitive and demanding sectors, we are very proud to say we work with the MOD and wider defence sector to deliver essential compliance services, with all work undertaken by experienced, highly-skilled engineers with the required clearances.

A diverse estate

The MOD and other defence company estates are made up of a diverse range of facilities.

These include barracks, airfields, nuclear facilities, naval bases and ports, education and training facilities, training and test ranges, logistics, munitions, oil and fuel depots and pipelines, communication facilities, medical centres, career centres and offices.

The MOD also owns around 50,000 houses across the UK for personnel and their families.

All these properties have to meet the high compliance standards required by UK legislation.

Sector challenges

The nature of the MOD means that its buildings can be occupied one minute and vacant the next, as operations adapt to suit the national and global defence situation.

This presents particular demands relating to compliance and constant vigilance around issues such as Legionella.

Working on MOD or any defence sites also requires additional consideration around security measures and sensitive areas.

Some sites are also extremely busy, with personnel actively undergoing training and all the other activities you would expect to find on military base.

At Rock Compliance, our engineers are used to working in these demanding areas and can carry out their compliance work with minimum disruption to the day-to-day activities going on around them.

Special clearances are required to allow unsupervised work to be done in certain areas on defence sites. Without these, it may be necessary for defence personnel to provide an escort. To minimise this, we are increasing the number of engineers in our team that hold these important clearances – another example of our commitment to making compliance easier.

Legionella – a common enemy

Legionella bacteria flourish in warm, stagnant water, which may be found in military or any other buildings that have been left vacant or have fluctuating usage.

Legionella bacteria cause Legionnaires’ disease, a potentially fatal type of pneumonia, contracted by inhaling airborne water droplets containing viable Legionella bacteria.

In the UK, guidance on controlling Legionella bacteria in water systems is found in the Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) L8. Specific environments such as hospitals may also have to follow additional guidelines.

Protecting the protectors

At Rock Compliance, we take the battle to the bacteria – and our innovative compliance solutions definitely take no prisoners.

All our services are built around reducing and managing risk. This is how we help our clients in the defence sector to reduce whole-life compliance costs and also operate in the safest, most responsible way.

Everyone in the defence sector works to protect us. We, in turn, protect them by ensuring their Water Hygiene and Air Hygiene is of the highest standard.

Services offered

Fire damper tests and surveys

Fire dampers play a crucial role in a building’s fire safety prevention and should be considered as important as fire alarms.

Rock Compliance Air Hygiene engineers can clean, lubricate, drop test and reset fire dampers, ensuring they are complaint and function correctly. This is vital in order to give anyone using the building as much time as possible to escape in the event of a fire.

Kitchen extract cleans

Defence sector canteens are used every day and are crucial in bases and operational hubs.

Grease and fat can build up in the extract and ventilation systems. This affects efficiency and creates the perfect breeding ground for dangerous bacteria as well as being a fire risk.

Regular cleaning by Rock Compliance Air Hygiene engineers reduces these risks and lessens worries about kitchen hygiene and safety.

Water sampling (various)

Water sampling and testing services proactively identify and mitigate risks like Legionella, Pseudomonas, and other contaminants in water systems.

This is vital for any industry including the defence sector to ensure the health and safety of personnel, maintain critical operational readiness, and deliver strict compliance with regulatory standards such as ACoP L8, ultimately preventing costly issues and potential outbreaks that could compromise security and operations.

Pre-commission of HVAC systems

The primary purpose of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems is to control environmental conditions within a building. The correct pre-commissioning and commissioning of HVAC systems is essential to ensure they operate efficiently and to the design intent.

At Rock Compliance, our team of highly experienced and qualified engineers ensures the commissioning is carried out in compliance with the latest Building Regulations, CIBSE guides and BSRIA codes of practice, as well as current clean room standards.

Reactive remedial works

Rock Compliance provides essential water remedial works, including addressing issues like Legionella risks, pipework modifications, tank cleaning, and TMV installations, to ensure water systems are safe, compliant and efficient.

In the defence industry, maintaining these systems is paramount to safeguard the health and safety of personnel, ensure continuous operational readiness, and meet stringent regulatory requirements like ACoP L8 to prevent costly downtime or legal penalties.

Our School of Rock Training division also offers Level 2 and Level 3 Legionella training, designed for learners who work in environments where Legionella growth is a risk.
